Swakopmund: DRC School Project
The DRC School Project and Community Centre has been founded to assist the needs of a growing disadvantaged community in the Swakopmund Municipal District. The DRC School Project & Community Centre has created a centre for the community in order to provide services such as; basic education, health information and a cultural forum. The centre serves the community as a whole while focusing mainly on issues facing mothers and children. The DRC is a rapidly growing re-settlement area on the eastern outskirts of Swakopmund. As a municipal area the DRC lacks many services such as supplementary education programmes, health education etc. The community is marginalized by its distance from the town centre. Services to aid the community in its transition from a rural to an urban area are desperately needed. The DRC School Project provides an educational centre for the DRC community. This includes a supplementary educational programme five days a week for 25-40 children. Health programmes are also provided at the centre, including an HIV/AIDS education and awareness programme. The centre also serves the community as a gathering place where community needs can be addressed. Our guests travelling to Swakopmund can visit the DRC School Project. Depending on the time available, you can pay a short visit or possibly assist by building a playground or painting a classroom for a brighter and friendlier outlook for the children. Terra Nova also contributes to the DRC: Each year at Christmas, we take the kids of the DRC school on their annual Christmas outing to the Camel Farm in Swakopmund. One of our local vehicle suppliers sponsors the Transport and all Terra Nova staff get involved: Buying presents, wrapping them, scheduling the transport and then we are off to a fun day with the kids. A lot of these children have never seen a camel before, so the excitement knows no limits – laughter, giggling, screaming – but most importantly smiling faces all over, arms around our necks and kids on our laps –the best thank you anyone could ask for.
